As mothers, stories are in our bones.
We carry with us the stories of our mothers and foremothers. We hold our own stories within us, always choosing the words of those stories carefully as we retell them to our children.
As with any grassroots movement, change happens because we tell our stories. Our stories not only illuminate the breadth and diversity of our many unique lived experiences, but our stories drive the urgency around why change must happen — and why that change must happen now.
And that’s why our stories matter now more than ever in this moment, because for the first time in a very long time, we are being seen. We are being heard.
Your story matters. We invite you to share your testimony about childcare with March Like a Mother for Black Lives. We will collect and share these stories in our work to advocate for and affect change for Black lives.
Submit Your Video Story
In 5 minutes or less, consider answering one (or more) of the following questions in your video:
- Describe what it was like going back to work or school after you had your child. What were your biggest wins? Your toughest challenges? What surprised you? What do you wish you had known before you returned?
- How does your family make childcare work? What sacrifices have you and/or your partner made to make it work?
- What have been your biggest barriers to childcare access? How has cost, schedule and availability, location, quality, employer support, IEP/special needs support, language issues, or something else affected your ability to obtain or continue childcare?
- How has access to childcare (or lack thereof ) affected your earning potential? For example, have you ever had to choose between taking a job or childcare?
- In a perfect world, how would childcare give you the freedom or access to pursue career goals? What would be your ideal employment scenario with childcare in mind?
- How do you want things to be different or better for when your kids have kids of their own?
